Let’s face it ladies, we spend tons of time in the bathroom, well at least I know I do! It’s usually the first room that we enter when we wake up and the last room we leave before we go to bed and so therefore, our bathroom should be nice! I really believe that our environment can really affect how we feel. Have you ever heard of the expression, “Your outer world is a reflection of your inner world“? If we are constantly surrounded by mess and clutter, it can make us feel stressed and disorganized which is not a good feeling.
You know what I love most about going to a show house or a hotel? The lack of mess, the lack of clutter and how all the surfaces are pretty much clear. It makes the space look bigger and cleaner. This is the kind of feeling I want to emulate not only in my bathroom, but throughout my whole house. I know it can be difficult, especially with three little kids (soon to be four) running around constantly making a mess, but we have to try.
Just recently I’ve been decluttering the house like crazy, getting rid of old clothes and toys and the things that have just been sitting there unused for months or maybe years! Since my bathroom is one of the most important rooms in the house (to me and my husband at least! LOL!) I decided to begin there and to start refreshing it, making it feel even just a tad nicer!
Here is my post on how to love your bathroom again with my 9 decorating, decluttering and organizing tips!
Tip No. 1: Get Rid of Old or Unused Toiletries/Cosmetics
I got rid of all my old or unused toiletries and cosmetics and leave out on the counter only the things that I use on a daily basis. I really like this organizing container that I got from Walmart. It makes cleaning the bathroom counter a lot easier because you just have to lift the whole container up to clean under it making cleaning a lot faster. This way, all of my toiletries are easier to find and everything has a place. I use all of these products everyday and this container makes it easier for me to access them. Walmart has a wide variety of organizing trays and containers for all your toiletries and cosmetics.
Tip No. 2: Add a Low Maintenance Plant
If you’ve been following my blog from the beginning, you know that I do not have a green thumb at all! My experience with plants has not been very good in the past until I discovered these very hard to kill plants! My favourite indoor plant which requires very little maintenance is aloe vera. It looks fantastic no matter where you put it in the house and it’s virtually impossible to kill. I just water it every time it looks too dry which is very infrequently. I think it also likes all the moisture in the bathroom. It has been flourishing ever since I moved it to the bathroom. My second favourite indoor plant is bamboo. It’s also very easy to care for and can be placed anywhere. All you have to do is make sure it has enough water! My perfect kind of plant!
Tip No. 3: Find a Cushy Bathroom Mat
It was actually kind of hard to find bathroom mats that were exactly to my liking. I wanted mats that were very soft on the feet and didn’t slip around so it had to have some grip on the bottom. It also had to be neutral enough to go with the rest of my bathroom accessories. After two trips to HomeSense, I found this perfect mat set. They are super soft and cushy, perfect for when you first wake up in the morning to brush your teeth. The last thing you want to feel is the coldness of the bathroom tile on your bare feet in the morning. They are both rectangular, one being a little bit smaller which works well for the toilet area. I was really happy with my choice and they are machine washable.
Tip No. 4: Place Other Frequently Used Products On a Shelf
I got this shelf from Ikea. Thanks to my father-in-law for measuring it and installing it to fit perfectly above my bathroom sink. It keeps the items off the bathroom counter freeing up space making it look cleaner and more open. It also keeps these products away from my toddler who is constantly getting her hands on everything. I’ve caught her playing with all my cotton products on more than one occasion. Now, with the shelf placed out of her reach, she can’t do that anymore! Yay! hehehe…
Tip No. 5: Add a Cute Accent Piece
Have you guys noticed that pineapples are all the rage these days? They put pineapples on everything! I went to HomeSense and found this cute gold pineapple accent piece and I immediately loved it and thought it was so cute! I was just at Old Navy today to buy my kids’ clothes and they also had pineapples on everything! I thought this pineapple just brightened up my washroom. It’s just so cute to look at!
Tip No. 6: Add Some Wall Art With An Inspiring Quote
This piece was originally in my kid’s bedroom but I moved it to the bathroom and loved it there. It’s mostly white which looks really nice and fresh. Inspirational quotes are very popular these days and I’m sure there is a bunch you can download for free online so you can make your own wall art. I found this piece at HomeSense. I placed it right above my towel rack and it looks perfect there.
Tip No. 7: Organize Your Cotton Products With Cute Storage Containers
I found these three clear, plastic containers at Superstore. I like how it’s transparent so you know how much you have left. I like how it’s plastic because it’s easy to clean and very difficult to break. You know kids are always knocking things over. These containers also come with lids keeping your cotton pads and q-tips clean. I love being organized, don’t you!
Tip No. 8: Store Your Make-Up With This Transparent Make-Up Organizer
I love this make-up organizer. I got this from a TJ Max and I just love it. I keep my lipsticks in the first drawer, my eyeliner and mascara in the second drawer and my brushes in the bottom drawer. It keeps all my stuff neat, organized and clean. It works really well and my stuff is always easy to access. I also use this stuff almost on a daily basis.
Tip No. 9: Opt For a Fancy Soap Dispenser and Toothbrush Holder
So for my kid’s bathrooms, they have plastic soap dispensers because they tend to knock it over constantly when they reach for it. But for my bathroom, I wanted something just a little bit nicer. I really like the detail on my soap dispenser. It’s just really modern and stylish. I like using cups to hold my toothbrushes because they are just easier to clean and get a sponge to it. These have proven to be pretty durable so far. I really like them.
After I made these changes to refresh my bathroom, it feels a lot nicer. It feels cleaner, brighter, with a touch of style. I really love my soft cushy bathroom mats which made a big difference in increasing the comfort of my bathroom. Now, when I go to my bathroom I don’t think of a dingy, unorganized mess but more of a relaxing place. I’m not ashamed of my bathroom anymore! LOL! I actually really like it now.
