There’s no doubt that having a newborn is difficult. Although you will receive a myriad of advice from your family and friends, you will quickly realize that there isn’t exactly a straight-cut manual for doing so. This is because every baby is different and there isn’t one right way of parenting.

1. Swaddling for Bedtime
Swaddling your child to keep them comfortable and warm when you are around is completely fine. However, it’s not such a great idea to keep him or her swaddled throughout the night. There are several reasons to avoid this.
The first is that swaddling a newborn can pose a potential suffocation hazard. While a newborn sleeps, a swaddling blanket can become unravelled and the loosened blanket can cover the face increasing risk for suffocation. The second is that swaddling limits movement. Not allowing your baby to move his or her limbs throughout the night can result in joint problems. If you decide to swaddle, it shouldn’t be too tight around the hips. Last but not least, you run the risk of your baby overheating. Signs of overheating include sweating, damp hair, flushed cheeks, heat rash and rapid breathing. 2. Becoming too Rigid with a Feeding Schedule
Overtime, you will want to work towards training your infant’s inner clock to fit your home’s daily grind. However, it is not a good idea to be too rigid about your infant’s feeding schedule early on. Your newborn will most likely want to feed every two to three hours. Watch for your babies cues. If your baby wants to feed a little bit earlier or a little bit later, that’s ok.
Your newborn doesn’t have a great sense of time after all. All they know is that they are hungry and they are not being fed. If you want a healthy, happy baby, feeding on demand for the first few months is the way to go. It’s also a good tip to look for hunger cues like, lip movements and sucking on hands. Crying is a late sign of hunger. Also, with sleepy newborns, you may need to wake them up to feed to ensure that feedings are happening eight to twelve times a day. 3. Not Brushing Your Baby’s Gums
Your newborn might not be chewing on anything just yet, but that doesn’t mean you can forgo infant oral care. Even if your baby is only drinking breast milk, residual pools in the mouth can still cause the multiplying of microorganisms, leading to tooth and gum problems early on.
To ensure proper oral health, make sure to gently clean your infant’s gums with a moist cloth regularly. This sort of mild gum massage can also help to relieve pains from teething.
