Why I Envy My Kids

It just seems like yesterday, I was a little kid myself, going to school, taking the school bus, wearing a uniform to school everyday. And then BAM. Here I am, an adult now, with three kids and one on the way. Time really does fly! When you’re a little kid, time seems to be ENDLESS. Summers feel like forever, and sometimes you’re so bored, you don’t even know what to do with your time!

Now that I’m….greater than 30, (I’m not keeping track anymore), there never seems to be enough time! We are so cognizant of our busy schedules and the family calendar is just jam packed! We’re juggling jobs, keeping the house organized, keeping up with kids schedules and activities, doctor’s appointments, house chores, the list goes on and on. We somehow find a way to still have somewhat of a social life, maintain the relationship with the spouse and everything in between.

Which brings me to my point. I look at my kids, and how they are, and they are just living the life! You know, they don’t have a care in the world!. They don’t worry about the past or the future! They are just present and living in the here in now. They forgive fast. They play and laugh often. They are just so….happy! There’s a lot to be learned from them! Read on so you can find out why I envy my kids!

They live in the present!

Like I mentioned, kids don’t have a care in the world! They never worry about what happened at school or what happened at daycare. They don’t worry about what they’re going to do tomorrow. They don’t even know what time it is! (My eldest daughter needs to work on reading the time! LOL!) When they get into a disagreement with their classmate, a few minutes later, it’s forgotten as if it never happened!

When they hang out together and play games together, nothing else exists! They are in their own little worlds and enjoy every minute of their playing. As adults, we can never just be present. We’re always thinking about what happened yesterday at work, what files we left unfinished. Or we worry about the future. We worry about the finances, the housework, the dinner! We are always looking at the time and it always feel like it’s running out, which is a very distressing feeling!

They break into song and dance at any time!

So we’ll be shopping at one of my favourite stores, and my kids will be in the stroller. Their favourite song will come on and then they’ll just start singing and dancing! They’re not self conscious. They don’t care about what anyone thinks or if anyone is looking at them. They are just so natural and happy, free to be themselves! I only break into song and dance in the comfort of my own home when no one is looking! LOL!

They are so slim and fit!

Kids are just so energetic! When I watch my kids on the playground, they are so strong, fast and agile. They play on the monkey bars like it’s a piece of cake! They can flip around the bars as if they’re a windmill! When I wasn’t pregnant, I would try playing with them on the playground, and man, was it hard! I wasn’t as strong as I used to be. Carrying my own weight on the monkey bars is soo hard! It hurts to jump on and off the playground! I guess I need to start playing with my kids more on the playground to stay fit! It’s a good workout! Talk about multi-tasking!

They get entertainment on demand with Netflix and YouTube!

Kids are so lucky these days! They have entertainment at their fingertips. They get to watch what they want, when they want. All the toys and gadgets they have now are so advanced compared to what I had when I was growing up. My shows consistent of Sesame Street, Mr. Dressup, Mr. Rogers and Under the Umbrella Tree. Now kids watch on demand! They’ve got Netflix and YouTube and parents pull out their smart phones to keep their kids distracted. My kids get to watch the latest movies when we’re driving in the van! They are so lucky! I so wish I had that when I was a kid.

There is so much to be learned from our kids about how to be happy. They never take anything seriously. They are just constantly filled with joy and happiness. They smile and play around all day, take naps and they really know how to relax! I think us moms can learn a lot from our kids. We need to worry less and just be more childlike once in a while.

  1. I was just looking at my 5-year-old super skinny, long-legged, toned daughter and thinking “man, what I wouldn’t give for her perfect little swimsuit body!” But, it’s no one’s fault but my own (sure I can blame my kids) that I didn’t keep myself better fit but is a good reminder that while I’ll never have that perfect little body, it’s never too late to improve! 🙂

    1. Haha! Thanks for your comment! We should just make like Ellen and break into song and dance whenever we want! It’s way more fun! lol!
